It was a first level party raiding a small tower full of goblins. Initially we had a plan of smoking them out but that fell to pieces and we ended up just charging through. Things were going quite well until we breached the 2 floor.
Myself and the party's other fighter charged on the landing first, rapidly followed by the rest. Suddenly the doors to the adjoining rooms burst open and goblins from all directions broke in, including some female goblins from what can be loosely termed the kitchen. The fight lasted many rounds, the goblins were quite weak, even for goblins, and we made good progress until a bunch of them broke off from hand-to-hand combat and started readying bows.
Being the best fighter I charged at them, figuring I could easily defeat them as they had there bows out. Indeed the first attack went well and I finished one goblin off in a single round, the others drew their weapons. I defended successfully against two of the three remaining goblins, receiving only minor damage. The third goblin caused a bigger problem. Our strikes were simultaneous, my strike was deadly carving his legs out from under him, shattering his knees. He struck me hard, the critical was rolled. It was bad, he hit me on the neck severing my spine.
My character collapsed to the floor, paralyzed from the neck down.
Fortunately, one of the other characters came to my aid, protecting me from further damage. By now most of the other globlins were defeated and the female goblins had fled back to the kitchen. Within a few rounds the remaining goblins where dead.
The party decided what to do next. There was no way any of the party members could cure me, they would have to get me back to the town to see if anyone there could help. Another party member had passed out due to concussion damage, but was otherwise stable, the other two rummaged through the bodies of the slain goblins for anything valuable but found nothing.
"I'm going back to the ground floor, see if I can find anything useful." said the fighter as he disappeared down the staircase. "Hhhmm, I'm going to, might be some treasure." said the other one and off he popped.
Leaving me on my own.... paralyzed from the neck down.
"Errr guys, are you sure it's a good idea leaving me on my own?" The door to the kitchen cracked open. "Err, guys." The door opened further, and a small goblin armed with a club tip-toed out. "Guys, some help here." The goblin hovered over me raising the club high above her head. My character screamed, as loud as he could.
*WHACK*
Somehow I survived. The party's other fighter had made his way upstairs to prevent any further E-crits, being rained down upon me, and I spent the next two sessions getting repaired. I look forward to the day I can show the other characters the same consideration they showed me.
It was a few years ago now and we decided to have a go at playing a quick
adventure with some 1st level characters. It involved searching the ruins
of a Wizards Tower - seemed simple enough...
So my Human Warrior called Maul (big guy, strong as an Ox and and wielding
a 2-Handed Sword) lead the group towards the Ruins. As we approached 3 Orcs
walked out of the ruins - much to everyone's surprise. Being the good Warrior
is was (note: past tense) Maul charged the Orcs. The Ranger let loose with
a lucky bow shot and reduced the 3 Orcs to 2. The Mage began preparing a
Sleep.
Maul reaches the 2 remaining Orcs as they prepare to melee him. Maul wins
initiative and with his first swing ever, does a major critical - decapitates
Orc number one!! Awesome - what a warrior!! Then the second Orc swings his
short sword and...
...Maul is disemboweled!!
He was a mighty, but short lived Warrior. RIP.
