After the death of Guardians of Order, I had no publisher to help take up Atlantis so it flopped. I contacted Margaret Weis Games, but they are busy doing Serenity. So I decided to reform Atlantis to Rolemaster/Spacemaster. While I was talking about it, I talked a friend of mine into buying Rolemaster Fantasy Roleplaying. He wanted to try it out. So, what I did was basically create a Rolemaster Modern game for the first few sessions. We use OpenRPG IRC chat for our games.
I've decided that this campaign will be an Inuyasha type game where the Player Character, a girl named Risa, gets transported back and forth from Modern Tokyo to Sengoku Japan and then back again. The Campaign is very Anime oriented. Here's the break down: Risa's profession is Zen Monk. But she trained as a Warrior Priest (Sohei in Japan), and her life is one of track and field.
She is a high school kid with all the worries and up and downs of a teenager. In High School, her rivals are Yayoi and Hikaru. Yayoi is the President of the Student Council. She is quite the little dictator since she can tell the janitors what to do (she can't control the Principal, the Principal has her own agenda). She torments Risa because she doesn't dress up or make herself up.
Hikaru is looking for ways to humiliate Risa. His latest ploy is to try to get Risa to wear bun huggers for one week all day at school. He was recently dumped by one of Risa's friends, Seiko, after realizing what kind of a jerk Hikaru actually is. Hikaru is captain of the Men's Track Team and captain of the Men's Ski Team.
Hibiki is Risa's Track Coach. Hibiki is actually a male teacher posing as a woman. This is simply because the gym teacher can't find a job as a man, so he crossdressed up as a woman to get the job he wanted. (The player probably figured out that Hibiki is from I Me My Strawberry Eggs).
Most of the above characters come from my Atlantis game. So, lets see what happened:
Like all of my games to date, this game is heavy on the Roleplaying Sauce, and light on the crunchy Hack-n-Slash. Probably an aim by me to emulate as much anime as possible that I've seen, the game started out tame.
Risa was rollerblading in her school clothes to school but has declined to wear make up to enhance her appearance (Risa has an Appearance Potential of 99) and has generally made herself look unattractive.
On the way into school, she met Yayoi, who decided to tease her a bit. Risa, with a Self-Discipline stat of 90, ignores her. However, Risa did complain about having to wear a "potato sack" (her school uniform). Yayoi had taken an insult to her school uniform as being refered to a "potato sack." However, Yayoi and her clique decided to enter school anyway. Then Risa entered school and met the Principal of Shininome High School -- who is Keiko Himuro. The Principal, in her cold, business way; told Risa that she's counting on Risa to succeed in school.
Upon making it to her History class, she met Hikaru, who picked a swell time to arrange a competition match. He bragged to her about the Beach Party she missed, and how the whole school knows by know that she can't swim. It was then that Risa challenged Hikaru to a running match. Hikaru tried to raise the stakes where if he wins the match, Risa would have to wear her "bun huggers" all week, but if he lost, he would wear Speedos swim briefs to school all week. Risa just said that she was looking to improve herself, but Hikaru smirked and said: "okay, have it your way." The history teacher entered the classroom and then they had a lesson on the Sengoku period of Japan. And then the day continued . . .
To a lunch room scene. It was then that Seiko confided in Risa that she broke up with Hikaru. She also told Risa that Hikaru planned to humiliate Risa's modesty by trying to get her to wear "bun huggers" all week. This makes Risa quite angry, although Risa had a subtle way of showing it.
Well, the school pictures had come and gone. During them, some how Seiko and Nanami had made up Risa to look very impressive, and that part of the day seemed painful to Risa. In fact, Yayoi compared her to either a gorgeous model or a complete freak show. But now it was track practice, and Risa felt like she was in her element. This is the time I got to introduce to the player the physics of Moving Maneuvers.
After speaking to Mimi, a fellow teammate, Risa got to run the relay. Instead of using her relay skill, I had the player roll Sprinting to get used to rolling. The first result was an absolute failure -- Risa walk-ran her part, unable to pass the baton in good time. Not only that, but Risa had become somewhat exhausted. She ran the relay again, only this time it was a failure. Risa hyperventilated and only managed to fall down.
Hibiki wondered if she should hit the showers, but Risa said no way. She wanted to do a full sprint, but only after she meditated. Risa managed to mediate and gain her composure back. She managed to run the full sprint as a near success (the player rolled a modified 99).
Hibiki suggested that she hit the showers. For the last scene of the game, I decided to have a shower scene. The scene was appropriate -- but Risa also got a vision of a beautiful male Samurai from the Sengoku period that made her lose touch. Mimi snapped her out of it, and invited her to ice cream with her boyfriend. Risa then got dressed, and the two went out for ice cream.
So far, my friend is willing to give the Rolemaster game a chance.
