Famous last words: "Sneak up? Pansies! I'm going in."
This story is from years ago, back in the late 80's (using RM2). Back in college I was GMing a game for a group of friends. However there was this one guy in the group that had been pestering us for a while to be able to get into our games so we let him in on this one. Characters were all pre-generated and ranged from 10th to 12th level and included your usual assortment of types. This guy (can't even remember his name now as this was one of only two games he played in that I had run) wanted to play the Paladin.
Anyway to keep things short here, they ended up trying to help some merchant who had lost everything to bandits while traveling through this series of mountain valleys, his caravan with all its goods and his family who had been taken. Anyway, they had tracked the orcish bandits to an old small ruined castle. The old moat was overgrown and filled with stagnant water and a foul stench permeated the air. There was a small smithy and stable outside of the wall. These were a warm-up of sorts, dealing with the orcish-smith that inhabited the place and a lowly ghost that was haunting the stable. Anyway the group watched the castle for a while, after all if there is an orcish-smith, there must be others inhabiting the castle, right?!?!?
Well the ranger and rogue each wanted to sneak up and into the place to see who or what was within the walls The rest of the group agreed, except for the new guy playing the paladin. He decided that he was going to just walk up and across the half-rotted drawbridge and through the gate. One of the gates double doors had been torn off its hinges and was laying in the doorway, while the other was hanging askew from the one hinge that was still attached to the wall. Everyone decided to simply wait at the smithy watching from shelter while the Paladin, confident in his ability to deal with anything that would attack him marched up and through the gate.
He managed to get lucky crossing the drawbridge (never fell through the rotten boards despite his heavy plate armor). Oh, yeah, he didn't wear a helmet as he didn't want to cover his beautiful hair and head (yes he was a bit vain). As he stepped through the gate, the characters watching from about a 150 feet away saw a huge spiked ball attached to a chain swing from around the corner and make contact with the paladin's head (the Ogre maxed the attack table (17EK) and got a 98 on the E Krush crit). "Crush Foe's Skull. +30 hits. Opponent dies immediately. Add +20% to your next swing. You have 1/2 round left to act."
Laughter burst out from the players as the new guy (who everyone was reluctant to let in on the game due to him being a screw-ball) sat there with his mouth wide open looking around at everyone, not knowing what to say while everyone else taunted him about having warned him.
That was one of the most interesting games I have run in my 23 years of gaming. There were two other incidents that were pretty interesting (that I may submit later) in that session as well.
