Crowd sourced NPC – Myrin

If you follow Iron Crown Enterprises on Twitter, you will hopefully be aware that we have recently been trying to crowd source an NPC for HARP Fantasy by posing a series of polls for our followers to complete. If I’m honest, it was a lot more difficult that I initially imagined (mostly due to Twitter only allowing three options per poll). Despite that, we persevered and here we are. Ladies and gentlemen, please meet our crowdsourced NPC for HARP, a nomadic elven warrior mage named Myrin:

Name: Myrin
Level: 11
Race: Elf
Culture: Nomad
Profession: Warrior mage

Age: 175
Height: 5’9
Weight: 145lbs

BMR: 13
DB: 18
Hits: 75
Initiative: 6
PP: 118

St: 82 (+7)
Co: 59 (+2)
Ag: 85 (+8)
Qu: 63 (+6)
SD: 63 (+3)
Re: 97 (+11)
In: 62 (+5)
Pr: 49 (+4)

Description:

Myrin is truly devoted to their religion. They are an avid follower of a little-known God of death and destruction. Some say the religion is a cult and that the ‘wise elders’ of the religion have created a group of highly trained assassins that do not require payment. People who say this do not live long but there is no denying that the religion certainly generates a lot of income for the most senior members.

Myrin is tall and slender. They eat only what they need to and do not indulge in any leisure activities. Instead they spend their time training and praying. Having trained with the religion from a young age Myrin has been given the title of ‘fury’. Furies are free to roam the land and kill whomever they chose in the name of their God. From time to time the Wise Elders will send word that a specific person has attracted the ire of their God and Myrin will be sent to dispatch them.

Necromancers are among the religion’s most hated people and Myrin will kill them on sight. The undead are an afront to the god of death and destruction and will also be despatched without a thought. Healers and doctors are also hated by the religion and are killed wherever possible. In contrast, the religion teaches that murders are to be respected and even protected. Myrin is not a bad person. They believe that they are doing their God’s work and tend not to make sacrifices of innocent people, choosing instead to sacrifice those that are a detriment to society (mostly thieves, kidnappers and rapists).

Bladeturn (14) 68

Shadow World report – October 2019

Hello all,

Terry Amthor here with the first special Shadow World update. Here I’ll share how things are going with upcoming books, and maybe dig up something from the archives to review. I might also answer an email question or two! Just send to THIS ADDRESS (via Colin).

The first in a series of small Adventure PDFs has been recently released. This one a twelve-page self-contained adventure called The Haunted Village. It is set in southwestern Emer as an introduction to the upcoming Emer IV (more on that later). It is linked via a Jinteni Portal for easy access; this also allows the GM to set in anywhere, including Jaiman if s/he wishes. I hope we can do more of these in the future, possibly bringing in more authors this way. Buy it now >>

The next big book coming up is Haalkitaine Second Edition. This is a massive update from the old first edition release way back in the 1990s. The timeline has been update, several sections expanded, and at last there are layouts of the sewers and the catacombs under the city, with a complete text key and the many NPCs and creatures inhabiting these underground areas. And finally, there are over a dozen all-new adventures! (The first edition had no adventures at all!) This book is looking to be over 240 pages, in full color of course. We are shooting for a release in late November.

Also coming up:

  • A new book set in the continent of Agyra to the far west, tentatively titled “The Shade.”
  • A new book set in northeast Jaiman, featuring the regions of Wuliris, Lyak and the Zor Wastes. This will have some changes for very early books like ‘Sky Giants,’ and also feather quite a bit of Taranian technology: some ancient underground bases.
  • More adventure PDFs, possibly including the Citadel of the High Priest Dansart in Zor, and other adventures in SW and NE Jaiman.

That’s all for now; thanks for reading!

Director’s Briefing – October 2019

If you would like to receive the Director’s Briefing straight to your inbox each month, you can sign up to our mailing list HERE.

Welcome

To the one hundredth Briefing and ninth Briefing of 2019. It really is the hundredth Briefing, which astonishes me.

Shadow World

As you might have noticed, we released the Haunted Village mini-adventure last month. As an experiment, we decided to release it as a Pay What You Want rather than either as a set price or completely free. Thank you to everyone who purchased The Haunted Village, whether you paid the suggested price or were even more generous. As we expected, many copies were downloaded for free, but there’s been an increase in sales of the bigger Shadow World sourcebooks, so it did its key job.

Terry has been continuing to bring Haalkitaine to completion in terms of the final new adventures. The RMSS stats have been commissioned and are underway. We want Haalkitaine available in pdf as soon as possible and print copies ready for Dragonmeet (Saturday 30th November).

HARP Fantasy and HARP SF

First off, HARP Bestiary. I am not quite finished with the BMR table and tidying up the chapters for Terry.

Secondly, Colin has taken over the role of art direction and his first task has been to read through HARP Subterfuge and come up with a list of artwork suggestions. He is now in the process of commissioning the artwork.

Thirdly HARP Garden of Rain is now with Colin for him to produce its artwork list (- yes, Colin now has a queue of his very own), while Joel Lovell is working on the necessary cartography.

My queue remains HARP Bestiary, HARP Beyond the Veil, Cyradon, Priest-King and RMU.

Until next time

The next scheduled Briefing will be in November 2019.

Best wishes,
Nicholas

Real life critical fumbles – Cookery

No matter how many adventures you’ve been on, no matter how many foes you have defeated and no matter how many villages you have saved, everyone has moments when they’re not fully paying attention or when they’re a little too hung over or when they are simply having a bad day.

That’s why fumbles exist, because no one is always at their best. In gaming terms fumbles can happen at any time and lead to you injuring yourself, injuring your friends or aiding your enemies, but fumbling in real life can be no less disastrous and fumbling whilst cooking can lead to injuring yourself, others or loss of life.

Cookery real life critical fumbles:

01 – 25 You made slightly too much. It’s ok, you can have the rest tomorrow.
26 – 30 It’s slightly burnt and there are parts that you can’t eat. You will need to eat again in an hour.
31 – 40 You burn your tongue on the hot soup. -2 hits.
41 – 50 There was a bone in the stew. A big one. -10 hits.
51 – 60 You burn yourself on a hot pan. A burn critical.
61 – 65 The soup is ridiculously hot (you’re not even sure how you got it so hot). -10 hits and -5 to all skills that require you to talk.
66 You decide that great food is fresh food and buy yourself some chickens. You need to pay for their upkeep. Also you buy some goats for milk and cheese. And some cows. And some sheep. And a lake. You are now bankrupt.
67 – 70 The food was undercooked and you have made a lot of people in town very sick. -10 to all skills that involve or are witnessed by anyone you poisoned.
71 – 80 The knife slips while chopping vegetables and you cut yourself. Bleed at 6 hits per round.
81 – 85 The chicken is undercooked and you make yourself very ill. Roll open ended on the internal poison critical table.
86 – 90 Your oven isn’t safe. It explodes causing you C heat critical fire damage and ruining the food.
91 – 95 The workbench slips while chopping vegetables and you cut off a digit. Bleed at 15 hits per round, seek urgent medical attention. The food is ruined.
96 – 99 You accidentally add something that is poisonous to the food. 40 hits, death in 30 minutes.
100 You luck out and cook your guest the best meal they have ever had. It turns out they’re a food critic and (without consulting you) get you a job in a top restaurant. On your first night as head chef you kill 12 people and make 37 more sick with your cooking. You are placed in prison for the next 45 years.

Roleplaying adventure hooks

Looking for inspiration for your next roleplaying adventure? Then look no further! We’ve put together these three adventure hooks to give you some ideas for your next gaming session. Enjoy!

Don’t feed the plants

An eccentric aristocrat is offering a significant reward to anyone who can conquer his new hedge maze. It seems simple enough, but something is not quite right.

Synopsis

An elderly aristocrat that lives on the outskirts of town has had a new hedge maze created and will reward any who conquer it. A number of locals and loot seeking adventurers will try but none come out alive. You can either investigate the aristocrat (who built the maze anyway?) or attempt to defeat the maze. Ultimately the hedges are not entirely what they seem.

You dirty rat!

A small village is being overrun by rats. However, everyone notices that the rats aren’t acting as you’d normally expect. They seem to be trying to tell us something.

Synopsis

Rats are swarming the village, but no one seems that worried. Help is brought in to find out where the rats came from and why they are acting so strangely. A little investigation leads to an ‘abandoned’ gnome colony in the nearby woods, but why have they left all their belongings and what has this got to do with the rats?

A giant task

An animist wants a live giant to study. His workshop can’t hold a fully grown one, so it will have to be a child.

Synopsis

Your party are given the task of finding, trapping and transporting the young giant. There are giants living in the hills near the animist’s workshop, but you will have to decide how best to track and trap the creature and whether doing so is morally ok. What could the animist what with it anyway?

Punishment tables for RPG Players

We all have our own little pet peeves when it comes to playing Roleplaying games, especially if we’re the GM. You might hate people being on their phone at the table. You might have it when people don’t listen or pay attention. Maybe your least favourite thing is tardiness and a lack of commitment. Whatever it is, the Perpetrators deserve to be punished. That is why we have put together these punishment tables.

I know people are against punishing in game characters for the transgressions of their real life counterparts, so I created a table both for punishing PCs and Players alike.

It is up to you how you use these tables. You could assign misdeeds a value and look that value up on either (or both) of the charts to determine the punishment. You could say that any misdeed is punished by the player rolling a D100 to determine the punishment. Alternatively you could just decide yourself which punishment you feel is most appropriate.

So without further ado, here are our tables for punishing players when they upset the GM:

In game punishments

01 – 25 Your character doesn’t notice a hole in their pocket. Lose 5GP
26 – 30 Your character walks into a low hanging branch – 10 hits
31 – 40 Your character tries to kick a small rock but accidentally trips on a medium sized rock and wangs their head on a big rock – 25 hits
41 – 50 Your character isn’t paying attention – 5 to initiative
51 – 60 Your character trips over a particularly lethargic rabbit and sprains their ankle. -5 to BMR
61 – 65 Your character is robbed in the night and their favourite weapon / item is stolen
66 For the rest of the session, your character is followed around by a sarcastic crow (voiced by the GM) who mocks everything you do. – 5 to initiative, -5 to skill rolls, -5 to RR
67 – 70 Your character donates all their belongings to charity (This could create a nice little side quest to recover items that are game critical. All other items can be considered lost for good)
71 – 80 The next time one of the party is attacked, your character throws themselves in front of their comrade and takes the blow regardless of the consequences or how unrealistic it is that the character would have made it to the attacker in time.
81 – 85 The GM rolls for you (behind the screen) for the remainder of the session. Only they will know how harshly you are being punished
86 – 90 Instead of 2 D10s, all your roles will now be with 2 D6s for the rest of the session
91 – 95 The next creature(s)/monster(s) you come across take a personal interest in ending your character’s life, disregarding the rest of the party
96 – 99 At some point (and you won’t know when) the GM will decide that your character has suffered a piece of terrible bad luck. The effects of this bad luck are up to the GM and when it will happen… Well, it may be today, it may be tomorrow, or it may be when you least expect it.
100 Your character trips over an invisible dead turtle and bangs their head hard. They are unconscious for the rest of the session.

Out of game punishments

01 – 25 You must give the GM your phone for the rest of the session
26 – 30 You may not eat any more snacks while playing
31 – 40 You must bring snacks and drinks for all players and twice as much for the GM at the next session
41 – 50 You must tweet “I must pay attention while playing games with my friends” every minute for ten minutes (during a break obviously)
51 – 60 You must give the GM your phone for the rest of the day
61 – 65 You must play the rest of the session putting on an accent of the GMs choosing (the GM may choose to change the accent at their will)
66 You must play the rest of the game in a silly hat/silly outfit/your underwear (GMs choice)
67 – 70 No more chair for you. Spend the rest of the session sitting on the floor
71 – 80 You may only talk if you raise your hand and the GM asks your opinion
81 – 85 At the end of the session you must sum up what happened through the medium of dance. If the GM decides you didn’t do an adequate job, you must do it again at the next session
86 – 90 The GM gets to write a message on your phone and send it to a random number
91 – 95 You must spend the rest of the session stood up
96 – 99 Your toilet privileges are rescinded
100 Leave now and come back next time with a better attitude

Director’s Briefing – September 2019

If you would like to receive the Director’s Briefing straight to your inbox each month, you can sign up to our mailing list HERE.

Welcome

To the ninety-ninth Briefing and eighth Briefing of 2019. Keeping this brief as I wish to keep up my editing momentum.

Shadow World

We are still awaiting the RMSS stats for Terry’s mini-adventure. Terry is continuing with his work on Haalkitaine, and is currently focused on the new adventures for the enhanced edition. On the side, he is scribbling notes for Emer IV.

Priest-King of Shade is also in the editing queue.

RMU

Aaron is deep in the shuffling of content between the two volumes of Creature Law and all the paranoia checks that come with that. The rest of RMU is formally in the editing queue.

HARP Fantasy and HARP SF

First off, HARP Bestiary. I decided that I would perform an editing sweep on all the chapters in order to catch any inconsistency errors between chapters as well as errors within chapters. So I have swept through from introduction through Colin’s chapters on animals and sea monsters thence to John’s chapters on land creatures, air creatures, dragons and weres, and finally to my own chapters on the undead, elementals and demons. Yes, I know that it is problematic to edit myself but my original text has been checked by others. So what’s left to do? In the introduction, I have designer notes to copy in and some explanatory notes to put on Miniscule and Gigantic attack sizes and talents plus an extended BMR table. Then some arrangement of chapters and their content for Terry’s benefit in layout. So this is more than ready to have new artwork commissioned and I am handing it over to Colin to be in charge of organising the artwork.

Speaking of Colin, he has submitted his set of expanded and amended text for the Cyradon core setting book. This includes revision to the Cyradon monsters. Now added to my queue.

I received some time ago an amended draft of HARP Beyond the Veil so that is also in my editing queue and is next in line due to the relatively modest set of elements requiring checking.

The editing queue is currently therefore: HARP Bestiary, HARP Beyond the Veil, Cyradon (because there is a bit more text which needs to be looked at), and then unless any smaller manuscripts manage to turn up, Priest-King (as it is a full large draft requiring an editing sweep), and then RMU is jostling with other manuscripts for the next slot after that.

Until next time

The next scheduled Briefing will be in October 2019.

Best wishes,
Nicholas
