Welcome
Welcome to the eighty-third Briefing and the fourth scheduled Briefing of 2018.
GenCon 2018
Terry and Aaron have been coming up with Shadow World and Rolemaster scenarios for GenCon. It’s a happy mix of standalone demo games and tournament games with some set in southwestern Emer (yes, your chance to glimpse parts of Emer IV early) and some in Gryphonburgh (of Tales from the Green Gryphon Inn fame).
We would be delighted to have additional games run at GenCon so please contact Colin if you are willing to GM some Rolemaster, HARP, Spacemaster, etc.
Shadow World
Charles has delivered the Jaiman NPCs in RMSS/FRP stat form. Terry has switched attention from Haalkitaine text to pour the stats into the requisite tables.
HARP, HARP SF and Cyradon
John Duffield has finished with creating the stats for the Demons chapter of HARP Bestiary is nearly finished with the Demons chapter of HARP Bestiary. So many Demons, so many stat blocks, so many spreadsheets. With the power of Demons ranging from the lowliest Imp (a mere 4th level) to a mighty Archdemon (a modest 95th level), there will be something to challenge player-characters at any power level.
I am back on the case with regard to Something Wicked, Something Wondrous, and finding spell updating very relaxing.
I have answered all of Colin’s Cyradon questions – I am sure he will come up with more!
RMU
No singularity yet, but I am trying to see if we can provide Jonathan and Joeri with some extra assistance to get them over the last stubborn hurdle.
Until next time
More editing and more fun writing for me. The next scheduled Briefing will be in May 2018.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

Director’s Briefing – April 2018
Out now – Molemaster for Rolemaster!
Iron Crown Enterprises are pleased to announce the release of a brand new rules expansion for Rolemaster – Molemaster for Rolemaster.
Created for the new Unified Rolemaster system (yet to be released, sign up to our newsletters to be kept up-to-date on progress), Molemaster for Rolemaster introduces a brand new race and culture to the system – The molefolk!
The molefolk and molefolk culture are a brilliant addition to any game and can easily be adapted for Rolemaster Classic, Rolemaster Fantasy Roleplaying and High Adventure Roleplaying (HARP).
You can download your FREE copy of Molemaster for Rolemaster by clicking on THIS LINK!
APRIL FOOL!
Of course we wouldn’t release a rules expansion for molefolk to be used for the new Unified Rolemaster. Having said that. I have created and it is available to download for free using the link provided… Given how long it took me, perhaps this year the joke is on me…
Happy April 1st everyone!

Welcome
Welcome to the eighty-second Briefing and the third scheduled Briefing of 2018.
Like January, February also started well for me and then went unexpectedly downhill. All I will say is that the crises that occurred have been resolved – I will not claim to be human again as Murphy’s Law will inexorably come into play and find some new crises to devour my time.
GenCon 2018
As you may have heard, Terry Amthor will be attending GenCon 2018 on behalf of ICE. Yes, it’s really true. Terry has embarked on an exercise regimen to ensure that he is convention-fit. Visions of Terry spending his time rolling dice to practice getting d100 open-ended rolls and cross-referencing results on attack tables and critical charts do spring to mind, but I gather that it is rather more energetic than that!
Terry, Aaron, Monte and Colin are planning the details of gaming events for GenCon. If you are attending or planning on attending, stay tuned for more information and if you would be able to help out, then do let Colin know.
Shadow World
Charles is working very hard to give the final batch of Jaiman NPCs the complete set of RMSS/FRP stats. Terry is working feverishly hard on the Haalkitaine text.
HARP, HARP SF and Cyradon
John Duffield is nearly finished with the Demons chapter of HARP Bestiary. He’s running his own checks to ensure that he has been consistent across the full gamut of the legions of the Abyss.
Colin has read himself into Cyradon and has sent me a list of queries to scope out the detail of his work.
I am in negotiation regarding an additional dystopian future setting sourcebook for HARP SF.
Until next time
While the eye of Murphy is hopefully somewhere else, I will get on with clearing my backlog and doing some fun writing again. The next scheduled Briefing will be in April 2018.
Best wishes,
Nicholas

Which RPG tools are the best?
One of the best things about tabletop RPGs is the fact that anyone can play. All you need is a pen, paper and your imagination (well… at least one of you also needs to have the rulebook as well). However, there are a lot of tools on offer which can enhance or simplify game play without destroying the essence of role playing. With that in mind we thought we’d ask our fans and followers which tools they used and how effective they thought they were.
One thing that is interesting but probably unsurprising is how few people use electronic devices or aids in their gaming. While 65% of people used miniatures only 46% use word processors with even fewer using tablets (37%) and online tabletop platforms (35%). Perhaps people find the use of devices distracting or an unnecessary hassle given that long term players have grown up without any of these aids. It would perhaps have been interesting to have asked for respondents ages to see if younger players are more open / rely more heavily on electronic aids.
According to the survey results, the one tool that people should be using more often is graph paper. Only 47% of people said that they used graph paper and yet it ranked second in the list of most useful tools (with a score of 3.29 out of 5).
The greatest surprise for me was how often people try new RPG tools. I suspected that players and GMs would be very set in their ways and would rarely try new things. However, 26% of respondents said that they tried out new tools often or all the time and 44% said that they tried out new RPG tools ‘sometimes’.
We had some great responses to ‘what would your perfect RPG tool look like’ including “None. Pen and paper work just fine”, “A speech recognition combat helper” and “A system that records video and audio of all sessions, and uses that to create (in real-time / constantly) an interactive text document with all that happened, with easy search tools”.
Thanks to everyone who took part in the survey. If you’d like to give your opinion on the findings or to continue the discussion, please visit our forum.

In a perfect world what tools would you like?
A computer based Campaign manager/combat tracker with searchable ruleset in one application
Something like Realm Works but with these added options: A game calendar where you can set the calendar up much like in Aeon Timeline, and an “individual” player reveal state. It would awesome if there was also an integrated VTT program like Mote or Maptools.
None. Pen and paper work just fine.
Rulesets for Fantasy Grounds is the big one. Also like art/maps to show the players. Everything else I can easily do with Excel/Word
Mobile apps for Character sheets
Software that allows .mp3 files to be accessed via assigned hot keys so background music and effects files can be played and mixed simultaneously. Software and/or spreadsheet that generates NPCs quickly would be great for random encounters that need a touch of detail
A well done master screen
A speech recognition combat helper!
Something like Fantasy Grounds, but with Realm works campaign management….
Combat tracking is still priority #1!
AI powered 3d visualisers that know what I mean, not what I say.
A system that records video and audio of all sessions, and uses that to create (in real-time / constantly) an interactive text document with all that happened, with easy search tools (who said what, which player requests to the GM are still pending, etc).
Table size tablet with a program for mapping, spreadsheets etc.
I would love to see the John dale rmfrp character sheet integrated with the roll 20 system.
A well thought out and designed character sheet. Most waste space with logos and dark background art.
I have seen someone use a Wii remote to recognize miniatures on the table and show movement ranges and area affects. Something like that would be great if I didn’t have to build it myself.
Real life critical fumbles – First dates
No matter how many adventures you’ve been on, no matter how many foes you have defeated and no matter how many villages you have saved, everyone has moments when they’re not fully paying attention or when they’re a little too hung over or when they are simply having a bad day. That’s why fumbles exist, because no one is always at their best. In gaming terms fumbles can happen at any time and lead to you injuring yourself, injuring your friends or aiding your enemies, but fumbling in real life can be no less disastrous and it seems that first dates are rife with fumbles.
First date real life critical fumbles:
01 – 25 | Your date thinks that Rolemaster is over-complicated and unfun. They’re obviously not the right person for you. You leave without another word. Better luck next time |
26 – 30 | Your date never arrives. Spend 10 rounds waiting for them before giving up and going home to order a takeaway and have a bit of a cry |
31 – 40 | Accidentally call your date by your ex’s name -10 to all charm type skills |
41 – 50 | Whilst cutting your food a stray pea flies up from the plate and hits you in the eye. -10 to all perception checks and -10 to all charm skills |
51 – 60 | In an attempt to calm yourself down, you have a bit too much to drink -10 to initiative, -10 to perception, -10 to all charm type skills |
61 – 65 | An ex is in the same restaurant as you and, upon noticing you on a date, they spend the entire time talking very loudly about how awful you are – 25 to all charm type skills |
66 | Though you have a wonderful time, you just can’t stop talking in rhyme. -30 to all charm skills |
67 – 70 | Your blind date turns out to be the celebrity that you idolise. Your brain simply can’t cope -20 inititative, -20 perception, your Re is now at -10 |
71 – 80 | Your blind date is your ex. Before you know what has happened they have punched you in the face and disappeared. 10 hits, prone for 3 rounds |
81 – 85 | In the process of cheersing to a good night you smash your glass in your hand -15 hits and an A slash critical |
86 – 90 | You are nervous. Your hands are shaking so much that you lose control of your knife, burrying it deep into your leg. 25 hit points and a B puncture critical |
91 – 95 | Your date is incredibly nervous and drinks too much in an attempt to calm themselves. Without warning they belch. The fumes ignite on the candles between you and you’re hit square in the face with a small fire ball – 30 hits, C heat critical |
96 – 99 | On your way back from the toilet you trip over an invisible dead turtle and fall face first into the table covering your date and yourself with your meals. They do not see the funny side and leave immediately – 30 hits, stunned for 5 rounds, A impact critical, dinner is on you |
100 | Your date goes really well and you end up going back to theirs. Unfortunately the second you get inside the door you are set upon by their family. They explain that they are in a demonic cult and require a human sacrifice. As you are led away to the altar, you can’t help but think that this is still isn’t the worst date you’ve ever been on. Death in 2 rounds. |
